A centre back who signed a YTS contract for Sheffield United in July 1995 when 16 years old and earned a full contract under Howard Kendall in July 1997. He captained Sheffield Schoolboys to victory in the 1993 English Schoolboys Trophy and also led Yorkshire Boys.

Missed much of his last season through injury before coming to Oriel Park but a spell with the Blades Reserves sharpened him up and he spent the Summer playing with Colorado Stampede in the American League.

Made his Dundalk debut at Finn Park in a scoreless draw in November but his best efforts could not prevent relegation although a two-month injury absence before Christmas did not help.

Shortly after leaving Dundalk David was forced to retire at the age of 21 years due to a chronic shin splint condition.
