Bio:
Summary:
A son of Kit Lawlor and brother of Martin and Robbie, inside forward Mick Lawlor had ten League of Ireland seasons under his belt when he came to Dundalk in 1976. During 8 years with Shamrock Rovers he had won two FAI Cup winner’s medals, had 5 Irish caps and had also been honoured at League of Ireland (1) and under-23 level (1).
He had just turned 17 years of age when he made his Hoops’ debut in a season end League game in April 1966, scoring against Dundalk in a 2-1 Milltown victory.
During Rovers’ successful 1967-68 FAI Cup run he had scored in each round and in the 3-0 final success over Waterford he added one to Mick Leech’s pair. A number of seasons with Shelbourne brought no success—his closest was losing in the final of the FAI Cup to Home Farm in 1975.
Brought to Dundalk by Jim McLaughlin to back up and eventually replace Seamus McDowell, he was converted from striker to midfield play-maker, and his creative, intelligent cultured play made him a key member of the squad for four seasons. He played a central role in all the successes of this period.
In a career spanning twenty seasons with six clubs, he was credited with more than 100 goals, including 81 League and 15 FAI Cup.
He spent a while as assistant to Jim McLaughlin at Dundalk and later managed Home Farm, Drogheda United and Home Farm Fingal. He also served as Chairman of the Professional Footballers Association and in 2008 was appointed kit manager of the Irish International team.
What They Said About Him
Jimmy Meagan (Irish Press) reporting on Dundalk’s 1-0 first leg European Cup Winners Cup victory over Hadjuk Split at Oriel Park: “For sheer work-rate, determination and skill, Mick Lawlor would be hard to beat on last night’s display. Rarely, if ever, has he played with such penetration and drive.â€
